Half day!

We had a half day today because of the impending weather. All STLCC campuses closed at 12:30 today. I got to miss my history class. ^_^ We had gotten out of my math class half an hour early, so that left me with 45 minutes to kill. The class that meets before mine was cancelled, so I went in to sit down. About five minutes later, a lady opens the door and asks if I'm waiting for a class. Mine started at 12:30, and I told her that. Then she says that the campus was closing at 12:30, so I could go home. That made my day! So we got home an hour and a half early.

A few updates. JR was sworn in as a member of the National Guard late last month. Congrats to him! He leaves in early June for bootcamp. Also, in talking to a friend of Ryan's (the guy I dated before I met my husband), I found out that he will be going to Afghanistan in March and will be there until June of next year. Good luck, Ry!

Lar's Maid of Honor and bridesmaids have the greatest dresses! The bridesmaids will be in the peri, and Von will be in navy. I'd put up Lar's dress, but there's the whole "The groom shouldn't see the bride in her dress until the wedding" bit. True, he probably wouldn't be caught dead reading his future SIL's blog, but you never know.

Anyway, I have homework to do. But first, a nap. I found out that one of the cartoon channels shows Garfield and Friends at two a.m. Wooo!

Happiness of happiness!

It seems that I will no longer be the only "old married lady" in my group of friends. I am happy to announce that my "big" sister is getting married! (No, she's not my older sister, but she acts the part better than I do.)

I'm also ecstatic that I will be one of her bridesmaids and Von will be her maid of honor. She's pushing for early June, so she has lots of time to prepare. (At least she gave our folks longer than 5-6 weeks. ^_^) Her daughter will be the flower girl, but since she won't be walking very well (she assumes), then one of her sisters-in-law will hold her hand and help her down the aisle. Everybody now, "How cute!" They also plan on moving to Idaho later this year, and her fiancé is vying for the National Guard, as well. Good luck you guys!

So yeah, we're all excited about that. That'll be two down, two to go for my folks. I wonder what they'll do with her old room. If the walls weren't purple, my younger brother could move in. Oh well, they'll figure it out soon enough.

Congrats to Lar & JR! Good luck in all you do!

"A Sewer Runs Through It"

As some of you know, one of my interests is genealogy. Late last semester, I found a book in the campus library that contained valuable information. (Feel free to read the first part of my post for 13 January to learn more.) In researching online and from past information I gleaned from my dad, I discovered that some of my ancestors, the Kaskaskia (Native American) side, at one point settled in an area near the River Des Peres. I used to think that the area was not too far from where I grew up. Apparently though, they had a village "five miles farther south on the bank of the River Des Peres, near where it empties into the Mississippi River", which they started about September of 1700. This village eventually turned into a Catholic mission, as the Jesuit priests were successful in converting the natives of the area to Christianity.

Of course, this piqued my curiosity of the river itself. In searching, I happened upon an article in the Riverfront Times about the river entitled, A Sewer Runs Through It (by Jeannette Batz). The link is at the bottom of this post. It was an interesting article, and the middle of it entails a short history about the river itself, and how it came to be the "River De Pew" that we now know it as. (Fun fact: It got it's name from the two French priests, Fathers Gabriel Marest and François Pinet, who helped to establish the mission. Hence the name, "River of the Fathers".)

Not Sold In Stores! Buy One Now For $14.95!

Right. We bought one at Target. For $5 less! You know those MicroTrimmers™ that they hawk on TV? Yeah, one of those. My other half bought one when we went to get Underworld (good movie). It works really well. I'm considering getting the ladies one myself.

We went to get our rings clean today, which we have to do every six months. One year ago today was when we bought them. ^_^ Has it really been that long? Saturday will be one year since he officially proposed. Then in early March, we'll celebrate our 1st anniversary. Time has gone by so quickly.

Anyway, no more sentimentality.

The Underworld DVD is ok. The movie in and of itself is really great, but the extras aren't that much to shout about. They have a music video, trailers for other movies (including trailer and a TV spot for the movie itself), and some behind-the-scenes type stuff, but not too terribly much. We got the only widescreen copy they had left on the shelves; all the rest were fullscreen. Yay, us!

It's nice to only have classes twice a week, but we still have to go to bed at a reasonable time the other days and wake up at reasonable times. Then the other days are devoted to homework. We don't get any other days off besides Spring Break, but the four day weekends all semester really make up for it. Speaking of which, where's my math book . . . ?

13 January 2004

So far, so good...

Well, I survived my first day. I have about a two hour wait before my first class started, because my other half has a class at 9:30, but mine isn't until 11:00. To combat boredom, I found Kaskaskia Under The French Regime in the library again, and wrote a few notes from the appendix. It has some family history in it; I have some ancestry from the Kaskaskia area, and there's some censuses in the appendix, along with some marriage records and baptisms from a few parishes in the area. My dad wanted this book for Christmas, but I guess I'll see about some other time. My only bet is to order it, as no bookstores I have been to have it.

Both of my teachers are unique in their own ways. First I have Elementary Algebra again. My teacher has this habit of nodding her head a few times after telling us something important. The last time I took this class, the homework we had mainly consisted of doing the odd-numbered problems with a few even-numbered ones added. This time, we have more even-numbered problems put in. It was a bit easier last semester because I could look up all my answers to make sure I did them right. It's a bit difficult to make sure I did the problem right if I don't have the answers to check. Other than that, this should be easier and I should do better.

My American History II teacher is a very interesting person, to say the least. He starts off class by having us close our eyes and clearing our minds. While we do this, he puts a slip of paper on each of our desks. Then he has us all open our eyes, look at the slip of paper, and write the first thing that came to our minds. He had written: The French, The British, The Germans, and The Americans, and wanted us to write three things about these people. Then he collected them and told us that he was psychic, and could read our minds and tell what kind of things we had written. It didn't go over too well; he demonstrated with the Germans and Americans. We guessed two of the American ones right, but only one German one. Then he told us a bit about himself. He said, "You'll notice something about me. I'm not from here. I'm from Oklahaoma." ^_^ He's actually of German descent, but grew up in Oklahoma. His accent is noticeable, but not thick. He wrote a book, but it was in German, so unless we knew the language, we couldn't read it. He also says he's working on writing a book about what Americans think of Germans, and some of the identities we assigned to them will go into his book. He likes to make small jokes, and only every once in a while do most people catch on to them. Along with our text, we also have to read four others: The Things They Carried, Inside The Vicious Heart, A Righteous Cause, and Southern Horrors and Other Writings. (This shouldn't be too hard... ^_^)

Ida wanna!

Classes start tomorrow for me & m'hubby. Luckily, this semester we only go on Tuesdays & Thursdays, and have two classes each. I intend to get a better grade in Elementary Algebra, and to pass American History II. I wanted to take a few other classes, but by the time I knew that I could take classes and decided what I needed to take, some of the others were already filled up. Besides, it'll give me more time to study and do better. Hopefully.

P.S. - Congrats to my baby sister, who is now a licensed driver!

Hey now!

Well, talk about feeling stupid! I finally figured out how to get to my comments on my old blog! I forgot about the pop-up stopper I have, and that I have to press the control key in order to pop up the ones I wanted. That's all I had to do to see my comments! What bugs me is the fact that I never had to do that before, even with the blocker. Stupid, stupid, stupid.
Either way, it was difficult to get people to comment. The comment program at Tripod was tough to navigate, and I hardly had any. Man, that was annoying! At least SquawkBox is easier to get around. Well, it seems to work for Moueska, at any rate. ^_^
All things considered, what I have now is better. Meow. =^..^=

Happy New Year!

First post of the new year! Ahhh.... (cracking knuckles)
Well, it's already 2004. Here we are, at the beginning of the new year. This time last year, I was a single woman, wondering how the relationship I was in was going to turn out. This year, I rang it in my husband. Last year was a good year for me. I finally had somebody to celebrate the new year, Valentine's day, and my birthday with, which I had never had before. I got married this last year, and I'd have to say that it was definitely the icing on the cake. Then my sister had her daughter, and I became aunt to another child, then two more followed from two of my SIL's, bringing the grand total to twenty-six. Although last year did have its downs as well. Not even a week after I got married, my mom's dad died from congestive heart failure. We visited him in the hospital the night that we got married. Then his wife died in November, a while before Thanksgiving. She even got to see her first granddaughter before she passed away, and was happy about that.
This past year brought about lots of headlines too, especially about getting Hussein. It was also the year of the trilogies, as both The Matrix and The Lord of the Ring were wrapped up (wonderfully, I might add).
Ups and downs included, 2003 was a good year. Hopefully 2004 will be even better.
Have a great year!

What's new?

Well, today was my last day teaching the 3-4 year olds. As of the week after next, the husb and I will teach the 9-10 year olds. Why not next week you ask? Well, we're going to Rolla next weekend to visit our Best Man whose wife had a baby in November, and she (the baby) will be blessed. (Her name will be put on the records of the church, and she'll be blessed by her dad. Some of you might know what I'm talking about.)

It sounds like I missed a good time this weekend, but I decided it was better to be safe than sorry. I didn't want anybody to get the Norovirus (see previous post), and I would not wish it on even my worst enemy. I'll spare ya the details, but it is not fun.

What else is new? Outside of all that, not much. I finally got my classes picked out for the next semester. I didn't do all that well in algebra, so I'll retake that, then American History II (took the first part in an intercession course). Unfortunately, I registered a bit late and those were the only classes I could take on Tuesdays & Thursdays in the times I needed. But there's always next fall semester. As a side note, congrats to Von, who decided selling leotards just wasn't her thing and will be going back to school in the fall instead, and finding a better job. Woooooo!

I guess that's it. I got one of my favorite movies (Dirty Dancing) for Christmas, so I am pleased. Oh, and I have plans for New Years Eve. We're staying home, watching movies, eating pizza, and toasting the new year with Sparkling Pink Catawba. Meow. =^..^=

26 December 2003

Norovirus

My MIL had it, my FIL had it, my hubby's got it, and if I'm not careful, I might get it next. Nausea and vomiting, diarrhea, and dehydration for one to two days is no picnic. I stayed up with my sickie all night and he finally got to sleep about 6 or 7 this morning, and slept for about six hours. He's been in bed all day, drinks all the water and juice he can, but is still tired and can't eat solids. Poor guy!

That being said, I probably won't go anywhere on Saturday, just in case. Sorry friends, but I might not be attending Jess's party. Hope the holidays were great, hope everybody has fun, I'll miss you all, and I'll see you around!

That's the Jingle Bell Rock!

Wednesday night, Santa's going to come out of hiding to give presents to all the good kids in the world. But then he's going to pass me over, so I'll just have to get presents from everybody else. : )

I've been thinking the past few days (and boy does my brain hurt) about all the different versions of Charles Dicken's holiday classic "A Christmas Carol". IMDb has a list of about 41 different versions listed under the title "A Christmas Carol", and a couple more handfuls of movies with Scrooge in the name. According to my dad, it has to be one of, if not the, most plagiarized British literary works. And quite frankly, I have to agree with him. Along with this, I realized that I have seen seven different versions. Well, if you count one of them, anyway:
Scrooge (1970) with Albert Finney (The musical one)
Scrooged with Bill Murray
Mickey's Christmas Carol
The Muppets Christmas Carol
A Christmas Carol (1984) with George C. Scott
Animaniacs Christmas Carol
Simpson's Christmas Carol

I know, I know, The Simpsons have not yet done "A Christmas Carol". Yet. My dad wrote a script for it, and did a pretty good job, if you ask me. I got to read it and play editor. :) I would love to see it on the small screen, but my imagination's pretty good, so that's why I counted it.

My favorite would probably have to be the George C. Scott version. Let's face it, he's the best Scrooge and that's that. :) No, I have not seen the Patrick Stewart version. If somebody's seen both of these versions and thinks Stewart did better, by all means let me know! If somebody can outshine Scott, then roll out the red carpet and let him stroll.

As we draw nearer to Christmas, I think to myself, "All I want for Christmas is two more weeks". But since I don't have the capability, then I better get my happy butt out there and shop some more. "Look out, I still got gifts to buy!"

"I've just decided to switch our Friday schedule to Monday, which means that the test we take each Friday on what we learned during the week will now take place on Monday before we've learned it. But since today is Tuesday, it doesn't matter in the slightest."

Movie Madness
Oh my freak, that was a terrific movie! We saw Return of the King tonight. Althought I think my husband would disagree, I think it was better than the third Matrix movie.
I went with my hus, my family (minus my sister and her daughter) and three family friends. We stood in line for at least an hour to get into the theatre. My dad had the cheek to ask my mom if we could get seats not too close to the screen. Hah! There were a ton of people in front of us. We sat in the fourth row up front. The audience was very responsive. We all clapped when the movie finally started, and every time the good guys did something, clapping resounded from all over, especially when one of the female cast members completed a heroic act. All the women cheered. I'm surprised I didn't cry at the end. I could feel the tears in my eyes, but they were never shed. There were a few false endings (meaning it looked like it was over, but then another scene followed, but I was pleased with the results. The movie ended exactly the way the book ended. Well, the very last scene, anyway. Let's see Harry Potter top that! :)
I got bit miffed, but not at the movie. Some lady behind me took a call near the end of the movie. Excuse me! Sure, it only lasted half a minute, but don't you think she coud have called whomever it was back? There was, like, ten minutes left! Well, what can you do? Along with that, I recognized somebody I graduated with, who sat in the second row, and I thought I saw someone a grade younger than me, too, but I couldn't really tell if it was her or not.
Last night, I thought I'd check out how the Garfield movie's coming along. There was a teaser/trailer on the official website. If the trailer is any indication of how the movie will be, I don't have any intention on seeing it. Garfield will be CGI, and everybody else will be real. I sincerely thought that Bill Murray would be perfect for the voice of Garfield. Um, I don't think so. His voice was not mellow like Lorenzo Music's portrayal of the finicky feline. I don't know what Jim Davis was thinking in going along with this. Unless I hear some really good reviews, or I get dragged by people to see it, I will not be attending when it comes out summer of next year.
Anyway, go see Return of the King! :)

16 December 2003

No Title :)
I have a two day break before my last two finals on Friday. Woo! I need it.
My algebra final was today. I got through it ok, althought I had to guess on a couple answers, but I figured guessing and getting it wrong is probably less costly, pointwise, than not answering at all. On the other hand, I passed the mastery tests required of those tests that were under 90%, which were all of them.
At the moment, I'm listening to some music while I do whatever. It's a genre not entirely known, as far as I know: classical techno. Yeah, so what? To each her own, right? I don't like country, some people do, get over it. :) Anyway, I found a few songs about a year ago, and I now have 6, along with a techno version of the song "Phantom of the Opera" (only Christine sings, though) that Jess introduced me to, and the techno opera from The Fifth Element. Beethoven's 5th Symphony actually sounds good with a nice techno beat. Night on Bald Mountain does, too. If anybody knows where I can find music like this, let me know! Unfortunately, there is no mention of any artist or anything, just the name of the song, usually followed by "techno" or "remix" or something similar. The stuff I have is off the 'net and I don't want to deal with Kazaa at the moment. Stupid RIAA. So, yeah.
Christmas is just around the corner (next week!) and I still need to shop. Might as well get on it. I'll see what my fam wants when I see them at the movie tomorrow. Might just get my brothers some PS2 games, but for everybody else, I'm clueless. Help!
Well, I'll let you get back to your lives. See ya!

This moment brought to you by "The Mystery Flautist".

14 December 2003

Finals Week!

Well, tonight was the stake (like a parish) holiday music program, and my group did wonderful! I made a few mistakes, but nobody noticed, so I'm happy for that. There were twelve groups that performed and we went fourth. A group of ladies sang "Go Tell It On The Mountain", one group sang "Carol of the Bells", one couple sang "O Little Town of Bethlehem" in Spanish, and one guy from my ward (congregation) sang, "O Holy Night", and did a wonderful job. There was another instrumental group, a few solo pianists, one piano duet, a female duet, and two solo singers. All in all, it was a wonderful night. I was a bit miffed because they forgot to list me with my group. They put up the other five, but forgot my name. But then my hubby wrote my name in my program, and that made me happier. Yay, hubby! I deemed myself "The Mystery Flautist", at least to those who didn't know who I was.
Now I get to study for finals. Ick. I have one Monday, one Tuesday, and two on Friday. Wednesday I get a lift because a) I get to sleep in, and b) I'm going to see Return of the King! My dad got tickets for us for the first evening. Mu'honey and I are going to bug his friend who works at the food court at Ronnie's. Last time we saw a movie and bugged him, we got free food. Hmm........ Nah, we won't do that. Maybe.... :)
Well, better get to studying! I have to be up there about nine to talk to my math teacher before my theatre final at eleven. Ack!

13 December 2003

Comment-age!

I finally figured out how to put up comments! All thanks to Moueska! *standing ovation* Couldn't have done it without ya, kiddo!
Now, my wonderful friends, feel free to bask in the glory that is the ability to comment!
I'd write more, but I have to get busy soon. Church Christmas party tonight, and we still need to get a dessert made. And I have to practice for my performance (tomorrow's the evening!), then study for finals that are next week. Then, no school, freedom, and a big bag of M&M's awaits me next Friday! Woo!
Later.

09 December 2003

Let's try it!

Hello all. Since Tripod is being stupid, I thought I'd try this out, seeing as how Moueska seems to like it (read: she hasn't moved it since she started it).
I figure I'll try this out for a while, and maybe even keep it.
Well, that's it for now. I'll see about what I can do for comments. In the meantime, any comments can be e-mailed to me, if one sees fit.
Later all!
